Random ramblings cuz I have nothing better to do... or something... :)
This is the site formerly known as Anneke's Haven. Within, you will find information about my previous White Wolf chronicles, and other random gaming related stuff. I also have a blog here, where I talk about pretty much everything and anything, though it's primarily about my exciting life... the definition of exciting definitely being up for debate.
Enjoy your visit, and come back soon!
Last day at work for the year = really slow afternoon... it's only quarter after one, and I'm BORED!
But I got Christmas presents from my co-workers today... the loot thus raked in: a bottle of organic maple syrup (not really into organic things, but I love me some syrup!), a can of mixed nuts (*sigh*... I don't eat nuts... well, at least I have something to bring to the boyz place tonight...), and a really pretty silver necklace with a spiral shaped seashell charm on it (very kewl... and if I decide not to wear the seashell, my ankh might fit on the necklace)... not too bad, I suppose... I bought everyone in the office candy or other food type products... it does seem to be a theme around here...
Now I'm resisting the urge to grab more of the candy that is behind my desk, or the cookies in the other office, or any other junk food... it's all chocolate stuff, so it's not good for me! *sigh*...
Well, it's my last day of work until January, which means that I won't really have much internet access for the next two weeks... so don't expect a whole lot of posts from me... in fact, probably none!
Two Towers tonight! :) With Gabe, his parents, two of his brothers, his brother's fiancee, Thor, Cindy, Jen, Brenna, and one of their friends... we ARE gonna need a whole row... :)
Wow, that's kinda weird... at least on my screen, for the first time in ages, my sidebar is longer than the text contained within my blog entries... gotta do something about that... and since shortening my sidebar isn't really an option, prepare for a longish entry... or a bunch of short ones...
Got all of my Christmas presents done, wrapped, and ready to go... and it's a week till Christmas! :) Rock on! Granted, I've had the ones ready for work since last week (cuz I didn't know which of my students would be in this week)... and I sorta had to get the ones for my family ready, cuz I'm going to give them to Megan, with directions to distribute them for me... cuz I'm not going up to St. Louis for Christmas...
In other matters Christmas related, the Christmas decorations at my apartment currently consist of a large pile of presents on a Rubbermaid container, under the monkey lamp, which has been decorated with one of my necklaces, more presents on the floor around the Rubbermaid container, and three whole Christmas cards taped to the wall... one from Seth, one from Sarah, and one from Shannon and Phil, which arrived last night... :) Yeah, I'm really festive and stuff... :)
Went to Hot Topic last night, and finally bought the skirt that I had been eyeing for quite some time... it's black and purple, with a cross design in the fabric... it's very much a Dani skirt, if I can find the right occasion for it... it took me a long time to decide to buy it though, because even on clearance, it was $23... which is far more than I would usually spend on something that I consider LARP clothes (and I doubt I'll wear this skirt for anything other than LARP)... but the way I finally justified it was that I didn't spend an insane amount on Christmas presents this year, AND it got me two more stamps on my Hot Topic card, AND it was half off the original price... so it wasn't too bad of a deal... but, like I said, now I need an excuse to wear it... it's almost going to have to be a special event, cuz Dani is NOT a dress-up kinda girl... :) The only important thing is that I have to avoid gaining any weight... the zipper on the back is short, and so the skirt BARELY fit over my hips... but the length is perfect, and once it's on and zipped, it's perfect... :)
Only 7 more hours of work today, minus lunch, and then a day off before coming back for just Friday... and Friday will mostly be cleaning things off my desk, and exchanging presents, and otherwise being lazy... then two whole glorious weeks off! w00t! :)
Well, it's official now... as of game on Friday night, Jubilee is the Bishop of Gulf Shores... and the Archbishop has directed us to siege Memphis... rock on... :)
Not only because of this, but also because of the little conversation after game on Friday night, that game is definitely looking up... the STs are getting things all straightened out, and I think when the new semester starts, the game is gonna rock... that makes this little ScaryWhiteGirl very happy... :)
Still waiting to hear what's going on with the Saturday game during break, and thinking about what I wanna play in the Vampire Battle Royale... in short, it's basically make the biggest baddest mini-maxed (physically) character you can, and duke it out with another dozen+ bad asses... not my usual cup o' tea, but it'll be fun as a one shot type of thing... I probably will go down fairly early, just cuz I'm no good at combat and such... *sigh*...
So the index should go off to the Press today, which means that I'll have very little to work on for the next week... w00t! :) It'll be nice to get that stupid thing off of my desk!
End of the Work Week Wisdom:
"My own brother, a goddamn shit-sucking vampire!" --from The Lost Boys
:)
Oooh, it's Friday the 13th... yippie... :) Game tonight, no game tomorrow night... in fact, we're still trying to figure out whether or not we CAN have game between now and when school starts back up... *sigh*... I'm hoping so...
Yet another day of work... at least I only have five more days to work before my Christmas break, which I've extended (through the use of vacation time), to two full weeks... of course, that does mean I probably won't be blogging much then, but vacation is soooooo happy! :)
Watched Sleepy Hollow (which Gabe had never seen) last night. It's a good Tim Burton movie... but then, there are very few Tim Burton movies that I don't like... well, I haven't seen "Planet of the Apes," and I really don't want to, either... :)
Gotta finish wrapping my presents sooner or later... they're mostly all done, but I need some boxes for some of them... and some ribbon would be nice... :)
Ugh... the White Wolf site is down, which means I can't access my vampirethemasquerade E-mail account... UGH! And doteasy seems to have collapsed as well... *grumble*... (never mind, it's back now... gotta love multiple browser windows... :) )
Double checking the index today, cuz my boss wants to try to get it out to the Press tomorrow... yeah. right. I only have 46 pages (out of 171) on my desk right now... the remaining bunch haven't been checked over the first time yet! *sigh*...
Well, I got just about all of my Christmas shopping done last night... still need a b-day present for my brother, and maybe a couple more Christmas presents for various people... now I just gotta wrap it all!
And because we're incredibly silly, Gabe and I each opened one of our Christmas presents last night... I let him open his Rufus Wainwright CD (since he knew EXACTLY what it was... which CD and everything!), and he let me open one of my CDs... Rasputina, "Thanks for the Ether"... AWESOME!!!!! :) I've been wanting a Rasputina CD forever, but they're too expensive at Hot Topic, and they don't sell them anywhere else in town... that's why the internet rocks... :)
Now we just have to resist the urge to open all the presents before Christmas... hehehehe... :)
In my oh-so-random wanderings across the 'net today, I stumbled upon this gem... Doors and Windows... usually, I don't like web comics all that much, but this one is good... reminds me of one of the artists who drew for Sandman for a while, in fact...
Now, here's the weird part... if all goes as planned, I will be playing in the artist's Victorian Age: Vampire game at E-Con this year... as will Gabe and gwarocks...
This is just proof that even on the 'net, it really is a small world... I was reading through a group on livejournal called roleplayers, and I saw a post about whether or not it had worked for people who had found gaming groups through ads at comic shops and such... there were a lot of comments, so I started reading them... saw one on there by a guy talking about how he had run a Sabbat game dealing with the Sermons of Caine... which sounded very familiar to me as a game that I _almost_ played in at E-Con last year... so I pop over to his lj, and he has the same first name as the ST in question... pop over to his webpage, and bingo, it's the ST of that game... who is running the Victorian Age game (other than the one I'm running, which was listed improperly) at E-Con... weird, huh?
Any rate, the comic rocks, and I'm looking forward to the game even more now... I like the feel of the comic, so I'm guessing I'll like the feel of the game, too! :)
So I apparently had an insane number of hits over this past weekend, because Laine's site was stuck on the Blogger list of the 10 most recently updated blogs for a long time... rock on, or something... :) That, of course, is the explanation for the pair of rather bizarre comments that I found on my blog on Monday morning... mystery solved... :)
We finished up Kindred: the Embraced last night, and Gabe agreed with me that the last episode is kinda cheezy... but hey, it was a decent series overall, and I really enjoyed watching it all again... maybe it will go on my wishlist after all... :) Of course, right before Gabe was about to ask me if the guy who played Julian Luna, Mark Frankel, was in anything else, I told him that there couldn't be a second season, because Mark Frankel had died in a motorcycle accident in England shortly after the series ended. *sigh*...
And my Christmas shopping is finally well underway, as a lot of the stuff I ordered online has arrived, and I think we're gonna go to the mall later tonight... I don't have a whole lot more to get, but I do still have shopping to do!
1. Do you get sick very often? What illness do you find that you've had most frequently? I would say that yes, I do get sick pretty often, but I've been pretty good this fall/winter so far (*knock on wood*)... but when I do get sick, it tends to be sinus infections. I have to say that I do better with those than I used to do with strep throat though!
2. I know a man who flat out refuses to go to the Doctor's office. You'd need an ambulance to get him near a hospital. Not me, I'd rather go as soon as I feel sick so I can get better. Do you mind going to see the Doctor when you get sick? Do you know anyone who just refuses to go to a Doctor when they get ill? Any idea why they are like that? I don't mind going to the doctor when I'm sick, though I'd rather not be sick in the first place...
3. How about visiting the Dentist? Do you go get a check-up every 6 months? Or do you dread going? But, on the other hand, I HATE the dentist... so no, I don't go nearly as often as I should...
4. I've heard about a diet pill called "Thermolift" that allegedly gives you quite an energy rush (oh boy mentioning this will surelybring us all a ton of Google hits won't it?). Although I've thought about getting some of these pill for the times I need a boost, I'm probably not going to take the plunge. Have you ever taken any diet pills, energy pills or energy drinks? How did they make you feel? Do you still take them? How come? The closest thing I've done to an energy drink is to drink the Sobe flavor: Tsunami. It tastes like a dreamsicle... sooooo good! It's also quite good with a little bit of peach schnapps mixed in... :)
5. Have you heard about "Gastric Bypass" surgery that many celebrities are doing to loose weight? (The process reduces the size of your stomach to facilitate weight loss) What are your thoughts on this procedure? Would you ever consider it? How would you feel if a relative were to decide to undergo the procedure? I have a feeling that there's probably something VERY bad about it that people haven't discovered yet... I'd never do it (like I need to anyway), and I'd hope no one I know decides to try it... just in case...
6. What do you think the opposite sex needs to experience to fully understand what it is like to be your gender? Cramps are a good one... having your boobs stared at is another... getting talked down to because you're not supposed to be smart is another...
7. And to lighten things up a bit before we go...What's the most worthless gadget, infomercial item or "looked like a bargain" item you have ever purchased or owned? I bought some thing that you're supposed to use on suede clothing, rather than having to dry clean it... I'm not really sure what it was supposed to do... I think I used it once... I have no idea where it is now... :)
BONUS: Why can't every day be like Christmas? Cuz then Christmas would be just another day? :)
Me, I'm pretty good... I'm tired, but it's Monday, so what else are you going to expect?
Well, game on Friday was slow for some of us... there are plans being set in motion, but they're rather slow plans... not good for someone as impatient as me, but I have people making sure I don't jump the gun, so to speak... hopefully they can keep the little Malkavian in check... :)
Saturday, we tried to go Christmas shopping, but we couldn't find a single parking space at the mall, so we went to Wal-Mart, and I bought a few things... still have a lot of shopping to do though... *sigh*... really, though, I'm mostly waiting on the various presents I ordered online to arrive... hopefully they'll arrive REALLY soon... otherwise there may be a bunch of late Christmas presents!
Game on Saturday night was awesome... Dani has a ghoul of her very own now, except that it's not really hers... something about not being able to create blood bonds... so she got her good buddy Lucas to ghoul the guy for her, and make him forget... and then she told the guy that he could be her ghoul... :) Yeah, convoluted doesn't even begin to explain it... :) Aside from that, lots of politics, lots of finding out what people think about who will become the next Prince, etc.... oh, and lots of shadiness... we love our shadiness... :)
And throughout the weekend, lots more Kindred: the Embraced... we've only got the last episode to watch now... unfortunately, I'm very much of the opinion that the last episode is easily the WORST episode... *sigh*... it's really a shame that show couldn't have run longer... or that they couldn't have done a Daedalus spin-off or something... just about everyone I know who has watched that show LOVES Daedalus... he's easily the most developed character, and he's pretty bad ass too... :)
Now it's time to type some more index... I only have V-Z left to do, so not much more, really! :)
I'm here, my head hurts, and I've got more cards to type already... *sigh*...
End of the Work Week Wisdom:
(we have two this week)
"We're not students, we're consumers..."
and
"I'm a fuckin' demon! --the latter of which is from "Dogma"...
I would also like to add something of a conversation that Megan and I had yesterday, as she tried to tempt me into buying Demon: the Fallen...
M: "You know you want it..."
D: "I'm not spending my money on that crack... now if someone were to give me a copy for Christmas..." [pause] "No, screw that... I'm not wasting a Christmas present on that!"
Usually, I have no problem buying anything with the White Wolf logo on it... but I've been balking about Demon since I heard it was coming out... it's not that I'm opposed to the idea... it's just that:
a) it's been done before... it was called In Nomine... I still wanna try out that system...
b) does the World of Darkness REALLY need Demons running around? In the revised edition, they REALLY tried to downplay infernalism and other such nonsense, to the point where I have to go find a 2nd ed book in order to find out about demonic investments... because it's the ONLY place they were printed... so I thought that maybe White Wolf had grown out of the juvenile "kewl powerz" stage... from everything I've heard about Demon, they must have decided that their target audience (read: the people who buy all the books) are the "kewl powerz" type of roleplayers... and I use that term loosely...
c) they list Demolitions as a skill on the character sheet... not a secondary ability... as a main skill... so gee... who doesn't think that all the little power gamerz are gonna have their characters go and blow shit up? And I'm generally against that sort of stuff, for a variety of reasons... but the big one? It's a lame way to solve your problems... try using thought, not explosives...
Sorry for the rantiness, I just got a little annoyed when I actually looked in the book... and I'm not planning on buying it... or probably playing it either...
::..::
In other news, we rented all three tapes of Kindred: the Embraced last night... Gabe had never seen any of it, while I was a HUGE fan when it was on TV... now, I will fully admit... it is CHEEZY to an extreme... Vampires being able to run around in the sunlight, as long as they've fed recently (which apparently means "this century"), Gangrel in the plural referred to as the "Gangrels" (that just doesn't seem right to me)... the FIVE clans of the Camarilla... the Brujah who are more like Giovanni... the Gangrel who are more like a weird hybrid of Gangrel, Brujah, and Ravnos... the Nosferatu who are just bald and have funny ears... calling the Primogen "bosses"... calling the Primogen meetings "Conclaves"...
But hey, it's vaguely amusing, and it's fun to watch again, close to 6 years after it originally aired... :) And not everything is bad... the Toreador and Ventrue are pretty dead on to how I see the clans being... :) Umm... but that's about it... :)
Not much of an update today... typing the index, and my hands are already tired...
Watched some Space Ghost last night... yay, Space Ghost... still haven't found the two episodes I'm looking for... the "Acid Smoking Crack Tripping Episode" of Coast to Coast, and the "Monkey" episode of Cartoon Planet... I KNOW they're on my tape, I just have to find them!
Yes, as the cute little weather pixie girl shows, it's snowing in C-dale... first snow of the year!! :) It was kinda nice walking to work in it this morning, cuz not a whole lot of people had been out yet... really pretty... :)
I was sad, though, because I put up plastic over most of my windows, to keep the cold out, and now I can't sit at the window and look at the snow... :( I had to open the front door to look at it, and that made me really cold! :(
Yay, I can post now! Apparently Blogger was having a template problem this morning, so it wasn't possible to publish... *grumble*... I really wish I had another option, but MT requires CGI, and I don't wanna have to pay extra for my site for that... :(
Anyways, I've been indexing all morning, or the majority of it... took a little break from that to go visit my advisor, so that I could register for classes for next semester... I'm actually taking a class next semester, believe it or not. American Environmental History... should be interesting...
So I've been running around, doing all of this enrollment stuff, and when I got back from enrolling today, I brought up my transcript on the computer, and looked at it... and discovered that after the spring semester, I will only need 1 more credit hour of coursework in order to complete the 24 hours I need for the degree... all of a sudden, this looks doable! Granted, I still have to get through the ungodly German requirement (self-inflicted, I suppose, as I'm the one who was interested in Germans in the first place), and I still need 6 more hours of "Third World" history... then the exams, and then the dissertation... but it really does look doable, if I can get through the German...
I go through cycles like this all the time though... first I decide that I really don't need my Ph.D., because I've already got a job that I like, and it doesn't require a Ph.D.... and that I really don't want to go through the trouble of the German requirement and the dissertation... but then I'll look at what I need to get done to get there, and it doesn't seem so bad... and if I get through it all, I can make people call me Dr. Dawn... :) But it's really hard for me to motivate myself to do something that I don't NEED to do... and something which I know will eat up a lot of my free time...
*sigh*... no, I'm not really looking for a solution here... just rambling aimlessly, in the hopes that I might figure something out... in the end, I basically am going to have to decide if I want to buckle down and do this, or just keep goofing off... and goofing off is so much more fun... :)
Wednesday - Went to get the oil changed on Gabe's car, got to look at toys and such at Wal-Mart while we were waiting... ran out to his house to pick up a new computer game that had gotten delivered there... had Chinese for lunch... went to Goodwill and bought some black-ish corduroys... I say blackish, because I thought that one of the pairs I bought was actually navy blue, but now that I'm wearing them, they look more like black... sorta... anyways, played computer games that night... mucho fun! :)
Thursday - Bummed around for most of the day... played more computer games... actually got my hard drive to defrag (w00t!)... went to Gabe's house for Thanksgiving dinner, which was yummy... went to K-Mart and wandered around for a little bit... went home to play more computer games... Cindy brought us turkey shaped cookies that Jen's grandma had sent... yummy yummy!
Friday - Picked up Karac and went out to Thor and Cindy's for LOTSA tabletopping... I ran, of course... :) We called it Turkey Madness, and while it was lacking in turkey, there was much madness... seems that everyone had a lot of fun, and I told them to hold onto their character sheets, in case we get bored over Christmas break... I'd be all about running again... :)
Saturday - Ran around and did useful things like going to Wal-Mart and Schnucks... played some more computer games... eventually went to Blockbuster, and found that both of the movies we had been waiting to rent were now on week-rental... so we got "40 Days and 40 Nights," and "Death to Smoochy"... watched the first one on Saturday night... very cute... :) Also watched Saturday Night Live for the first time in ages... and a little bit of Antiques Roadshow...
Sunday - Woke up late, did laundry, got a lot of water in my ears in the shower, and was miserable for a while after that... :( Ate cereal for dinner (yummy!)... watched "Death to Smoochy"... VERY funny... :)
And now I'm here at work, taking a break from indexing, to tell all of my loyal readers about my oh-so-exciting weekend... I know that you are all thrilled and enriched from reading about such trivialities... yay... :)
But hey, not like I have much else to write about at the moment... :)
I'm back, and I'm extremely busy... update on the weekend will have to wait until later... :)
But for now, the secret recipe for "pink stuff"... :)
- 1 box of Jello. A flavor that is reddish in color is preferable, but not necessary...*
- 1 can of crushed pineapple
- 1 16 oz. container of cottage cheese. Small curd being preferable.
- 1 tub of whipped cream. Cool Whip is the best, and don't even think about using the "low fat" stuff... bad idea...
Anyways, drain the can of pineapple, dump all of the above ingredients into a bowl, and mix well. Note that the Jello is not prepared as the box would suggest, but simply dumped in dry...
* Reddish colored Jello is preferred, but not necessary, for "pink stuff"... you see... if you use reddish colored Jello, the pink stuff will, in fact, be pink in color. However, it is perfectly acceptable to use any color/flavor Jello you wish... and yet, it will still be referred to as "pink stuff"... this is a source of endless amusement for my family, and endless confusion for those who have not been indoctrinated into the secrets of "pink stuff"... :)
Oh, and contrary to popular belief, "pink vomit" is not an acceptable alternate term for "pink stuff"... you do want people to eat it, after all... :)
