Random ramblings cuz I have nothing better to do... or something... :)
This is the site formerly known as Anneke's Haven. Within, you will find information about my previous White Wolf chronicles, and other random gaming related stuff. I also have a blog here, where I talk about pretty much everything and anything, though it's primarily about my exciting life... the definition of exciting definitely being up for debate.
Enjoy your visit, and come back soon!
Wrestling last night was pre-empted (in our area, at least) by a Rams-Chiefs game... I didn't even know that the NFL played on Thursday nights... I thought it was strictly a Sunday and Monday sort of thing... *sigh*...
So with no wrestling to watch, we ended up watching about an hour and a half of the MTV Video awards... wow... have I ever mentioned that I pretty much hate all popular music?
And can anyone explain to me the REAL difference between hip hop, R&B, and rap? Seriously. I couldn't discern any REAL difference between any of the songs nominated in any of those three categories... sure, Eminem was only in the rap category, but there was a LOT of overlap other than that...
Well, at least AFI won an award... granted, I don't really know much about AFI, but they look kinda kewl! :)
Ah well... it's Friday... and if I can stop sniffling and blowing my nose for about five minutes, I might actually enjoy the day... :)
We got our copy of "Two Towers" on Tuesday, but didn't get to watch it till last night... I'm still impressed by it, but it felt SOOOOO much longer watching it in the living room than it did watching it in the theater... ah well... :)
We've been watching "Moulin Rouge" at bedtime... I can never get sick of that movie... :) It's bad to go to sleep to, though, cuz I always want to stay awake to hear more of the songs... *sigh*...
Not much else going on of excitement... it looks like it might rain today... if it does, it needs to wait until after lunch, and after Gabe has gone home... at least if it rains then, he can get the umbrella and use it to come back to school in the afternoon... before then, he has to walk a BUNCH, and that would suck in the rain...
I'm tired and my throat hurts... I need to make a phone call (or three) and then get to work... :)
A little game, for those of you who watch wrestling...
A while back, when RAW was really sucking, we started blaming it on Bischoff... when Stone Cold was made co-GM, it made things a little better... especially when Stone Cold was the only GM there...
But we all know that Bischoff and Stone Cold hate each other... so those of us who watch wrestling together on Mondays came up with a little game of sorts...
We call Stone Cold "daddy," and Bischoff is "mommy"... clearly, "daddy" and "mommy" are fighting... and, what's more, they're separated... so when Stone Cold is running the show, we're at "daddy's" house; and when Bischoff runs the show, we're at "mommy's" house...
This has led to such profound statements as "I like it better when we're at daddy's house... he lets us drink beer"... :)
Now, by extension, many of the other wrestling people have become a part of this "family"... Vince McMahon is "grandpa," and Linda is "grandma"... Shane and Stephie are our uncle and aunt... (though we still haven't figured out if Bischoff or Stone Cold is the child of Vince and Linda...)
Now the game part of this comes in when you remember who is who in the family, and then apply it to the newer storylines... like that kiss between Bischoff and Linda... that would be mommy making out with grandma... ewwwwwww... :)
Anyways, it keeps us amused... everyone else will probably just think it's retarded... :)
Well, I finally got to see "The Ring"... honestly, I didn't think it was all that scary... but maybe that's just me... :) About the only part that bothered me was seeing the dead girl in the closet... cuz we all know I'm already terrified of closets and the things which lurk within them... way to feed one of my neuroses... ;)
We watched "The Others" yesterday... I've seen it about 3 times now... it was really really kewl the first time, and it's still a neat movie, but once you know what the deal is, it loses some of the novelty... it's not like one of those where you can forget exactly what happens in the end, I guess... :)
Gabe has a new nickname, thanks to my blog... it's Gabe O Negative, of course... it's popped up on my E-mail (a message that was sent to both of us), and that's how Thor called on him to get his nomination on Saturday... so to whoever found my page by searching for that... you rock... :)
My work E-mail keeps getting bombarded with that damn virus that's going around... so every 15 minutes my virus checker pops up and tells me about how it renamed and moved a file... yippie! :)
Meh... Friday Five is only so-so, so I won't do it today... :)
Yes, I know I haven't updated lately... haven't been doing much lately...
Watched wrestling last night, sorta... I wasn't really interested, and was rather tired... I did manage to sketch out a conversion for a cross stitch pattern though... used to be a rather nice Celtic cross; now it's gonna be an ankh... :) Still need to work out how I'm going to do the inside design... wonder how hard an eye of Horus for the middle would be... *ponder*...
We're borrowing "The Ring" from Karac, though I'm debating whether or not I should watch it... I've heard it's very good, but I don't do so well with horror movies... "Freddy vs. Jason" didn't bother me too much, but I've actually forgotten most of that movie already... too much other stuff was going on to remember it coherently...
Speaking of "Freddy vs. Jason," though, here's a little something I explained to one of my student workers the other day...
If I had to pick between Freddy or Jason movies to watch, I'd probably go with Jason. Freddy is all about jumping out from nowhere and scaring the shit out of you, whereas Jason is just about killin'. Sure, Jason can teleport, but it's predictable teleportation... if you're running away from him, and look behind you, and he's gone, you KNOW he'll be popping up in front of you momentarily... and that's the kind of scariness I can deal with... the predictable kind... :)
Oooh... add "The Order," September 5th... that's the new Heath Ledger movie with the Catholic secret society, and the cute chick from "40 Days and 40 Nights"... :)
"The House of the Dead," Oct. 10. It's a zombie-rave movie... no, not zombies at a rave... well... yeah... a rave on a deserted island, except it's not really deserted... why am I thinking I should shut up, because this is a Bad Idea(tm)?
Okay, I'm done now, before I find some other attrocity... "Gothika," which has a kewl sounding title, is probably such an attrocity... Halle Berry and Penelope Cruz (and Robert Downey Jr.)... something about a psychiatrist... this movie is telling me to back away slowly and show no fear... or something like that...
Permalink to the place where I mentioned all the movie release dates for the movies I want to see the rest of this year... in case anybody wanted to bookmark it or anything... :)
It still looks like nothing till Sept. 12th, but I'll double check IMDB the next time I think about it... which will probably be shortly... as I'm waiting for my boss to return from wherever he's disappeared to, so that I can find out if he has work ready for me now, or if I still have to wait on that...
Saw "Freddy vs. Jason" on Friday night... before that, I had only seen "Dream Warriors" out of all of the Freddy and Jason movies... so I was a little out of the loop... :) But at least I was able to somewhat appreciate it... and decide that Freddy movies would scare me a lot more than Jason movies... :)
We also finally watched "Daredevil" last night... it was very mediocre... not bad, by any means, just not great or anything like that... but damn, Electra is a hottie... :)
Now I'm just back at work, with lots to do today...
I was checking my SiteMeter, seeing what people had searched for to find my site... tucked in there among many mentions of "Critical Mass" (the new Marvel Heroclix expansion), was...
Is it really Friday? Guess so... here's the Friday Five!
1. How much time do you spend online each day? Well, this is tricky... my computer at work has a connection that's always on, so I usually pop on and offline throughout the 8.5 hours that I'm here each day... outside of work, I'm rarely online... maybe half an hour or so on the weekends, and maybe another half an hour at some point during the week in the evening.
2. What is your browser homepage set to? At work, msn.com. At home, doteasy.com.
3. Do you use any instant messaging programs? If so, which one(s)? I have accounts on AIM, Yahoo!, ICQ, and probably another couple of programs, but I'm almost never on them... AIM is the one I'm on, if I ever am...
4. Where was your first webpage located?Anneke's Haven... and it's still there... just very stripped down... :)
5. How long have you had your current website? About a year and a half, almost precisely...
::..::
Been busy at work again... that time before the beginning of a new semester has a tendency to be hectic around here... not only do we have normal work, but also the preparation for my bosses' classes. Such fun! :)
At least we're almost ready for him to teach Monday morning... that's good! :)
Thursday: woke up early-ish, helped Thor and Cindy move in to their new house for the better part of the day... went and ate a TON at Golden Corral for dinner... yummy stuff... :)
Friday: woke up early-ish again, picked up the "kids" (a.k.a. Karac and Megan), and drove to Chicago. Due to construction on highway 57, ended up in the ghetto... drove to the hotel as quickly as humanly possible, to find ourselves on the outskirts of the ghetto... not bad, could have been much worse... took Megan to the church for the rehearsal, and discovered that we were only in the ghetto by about 4 blocks... :) Saw Trevor and Diana, which was quite pleasant... found an IHOP for dinner, and then took Karac to K-Mart to buy dress clothes... :)
Saturday: woke up earlier than I should have... went to Dunkin Donuts for breakfast, where we encountered the psycho Nazi workers from hell ("you get up... you get napkin!")... realized we had a lot of time to kill, so we drove to the mall, where we were amused in Hot Topic (HT Employee: "... so if you spend $150..." Me: *stifling laughter*), not impressed by the Wizards of the Coast store, and also not really impressed by the other gaming store in the mall... (we shoulda known not to trust MALL gaming stores...) Went to the wedding, got to see Michelle and a chunk of my family (yay.)... went to the reception, and had a generally decent time... food wasn't the best, but at least edible, and the wine was rather good... ;) Went home after that, and I apparently slept through the boyz laughing their ASSES off while watching Most Extreme Elimination Challenge...
Sunday: Woke up early (sensing a theme yet?), picked up Megan, drove back to Carbondale... became vegetables for the rest of the day... :)
Monday: Slept late! (w00t!) Mostly didn't do anything, aside from going to the fabric store and getting fabric for another pair of pants, a skirt, and a hopeful shirt for Gabe... I say hopeful because I don't have a pattern yet... so I'm hoping I can find one, and hoping I bought enough fabric... :) Went over to Thor and Cindy's house, where we watched South Park, as the cable wasn't hooked up yet...
Tuesday: Mostly putzed around all day, until we rode up to St. Louis for the Type O concert... which was VERY kewl... New Death Sensation (1st opening band) was mostly just loud... Lacuna Coil seemed pretty good (it was hard to hear them), and the chick lead singer is hot... :) And Type O rocked very much... and I had a decent view for the first half of their set, and a WONDERFUL view for the second... thanks to the late 30s-early 40s couple that left halfway through, and gave Cindy and I their seats... :)
Wednesday: Slept late (we needed it!) and putzed around... watched "Orgazmo," which I had never seen before... ludicrous doesn't even begin to describe it... :)
So yeah, here I am, back at work, with a clean desk (already!)... such is my exciting life...
Yet again, nothing of interest to report... I spent most of last night subjugating puny pathetic tribes (a.k.a. playing Civ)... and when I wasn't doing that, I was adding more MP3s to my computer (from CDs that I own)...
Well, I finally wrote out the pattern for the pants I've been talking about... unfortunately, though, the pictures that we took of me wearing them aren't very good... I think we need to try taking some outside, with natural light... the dim little apartment doesn't work well when there is no flash... *sigh*...
But anyways, yeah... I'm even wearing them today... :)
And when I have GOOD pictures, maybe I'll post them... :)
Boss is out today, and possibly tomorrow as well... not much for me to do at work then, huh?
What the heck, I'll do the Monday Mission this week... :)
1. When you take a vacation, do you ever suffer from Internet withdrawal? Or maybe the nagging urge to blog or read blogs? Or are you glad to be away? YES! I should use the time to take a break, but I don't... I'm going on "vacation" part of this week and next, and I'll probably still try to get online...
2. Have you ever been "furloughed" (told to take time off work without pay) or laid off? How did that impact your family dynamics? Your finances? If not to you, have you seen it happen to anyone you know? How did they handle it? Nope, I haven't. And though there are quite a few lay-offs going on at the university right now, I only know one person who has been laid off...
3. If you fell on hard times, what is are some non-essential reoccurring luxury expenses (cable TV, TiVo subscription, cigarettes, high-speed net connection, newspaper, daily Starbucks coffee, etc.) you would give up to save money? I don't have cable or a high-speed net connection (they're actually things that I'm planning to get soon), but they would probably go pretty easily if I had them. That's about it, though... mostly I don't have a lot of non-essential reoccuring luxury expenses...
4. On the same thought, what is the one non-essential expense you would NOT give up? My cell phone. Yes, I could just have a land line, but when they're about the same price, plus the fact that the cell is portable and has free long distance, I can't see NOT having it...
5. Would you ever ask your family (parents, in-laws, relatives) for financial assistance? What would be some of your concerns about asking for help? Have you ever asked for it before? Did it go well? Probably not... I borrowed money from my mom before, when I moved to Carbondale (and paid it all back), but I'd rather not have to do it again. It's just easier that way.
6. Has a friend or relative ever borrowed money from you? Who were they and how much did they want? Did you ever get paid back, or did it matter? Did you feel compelled to keep an eye on them to see if they spent it wisely? Nope... but then again, I don't usually have a LOT of spare money...
7. Imagine you won a tax-free gift of $7,000. The only stipulation on the gift is that it must not be invested or saved, and must be spent before 2004. How would you use the money? Well, I guess Gabe and I would be getting a lot of movies, CDs, and clothes, and maybe a new laptop (yeah, like we need a 5th computer!)... if I had a little more than that, it would work well as a down payment for a house, but $7,000 wouldn't quite be enough for the houses in this area... at least not the ones I would want to live in! :)
::..::
So yeah, vacation of sorts coming up...
I'm at work today, tomorrow, and Wednesday.
Thursday: laundry, helping Thor and Cindy move to the new house, wrestling
Friday: driving to Chicago... leaving probably far earlier than any of us really want to be awake and coherent, but when it's a 5-ish hour drive, and we will want to eat and use the restroom and things of that sort, it's more like 6 hours, and Megan has to go to the rehearsal (and subsequent dinner)... so we have to get there by dinner time, I'd say...
Saturday: dunno what we're doing all morning, but the wedding is in the afternoon, and the reception after that
Sunday: driving back home, again leaving at probably far earlier than we would like to
Monday: I have absolutely no idea... and I like it that way!
Tuesday: nothing in the day, but Type O Negative is that night
Wednesday: recovering from Type O
And then Thursday it's back to work... so it's only 7 days (as opposed to the 9 consecutive days off I had last year), but it's still gonna be nice... :)
1. What time do you wake up on weekday mornings? 6:45 is when the alarm goes off, and I usually get up right about then... give or take a minute or two...
2. Do you sleep in on the weekends? How late? Usually till about 10, though it often goes later, if we've been out super late...
3. Aside from waking up, what is the first thing you do in the morning? Roll over to kiss Gabe, assuming he hasn't buried himself in the blankets... :)
4. How long does it take to get ready for your day? About 45 minutes, all told... but that's from the time I get up to the time I leave for work... there's usually at least 15 minutes of laying on the couch in there... :)
5. When possible, what is your favorite place to go for breakfast? Hmmm... hard to say... around here, it's probably Denny's... if I were in St. Louis, though, it would be St. Louis Bread Co... :)
Can I go back to bed now? :)
::..::
Pictures of the new pants are now on my computer at home, but I didn't put them on a disk... I could have asked Gabe to E-mail them to me, but seeing as my E-mail is down, that wouldn't do me any good either... so they'll be here eventually...
Now I'm hoping that my headache will go away, cuz if it doesn't, I'll end up going home early... that isn't a bad thing, but the fact that all I would be able to do at home is lay around and maybe listen to music is the bad part... ugh...
